The Book of Jamaica

Of all the peoples on this jungled, shantied, hazy-hot island-a country shimmering with Rasta, rebellion, and racial tension-the Maroons were unique.  For they alone had the sacred Treaty, insuring their land rights, protecting their trade, keeping their people safe from the heavy-handed police.

The Maroons called him Johnny, the strange American white man who had come to catalogue their ancestral ways.  And Johnny took part in their laughter and drink and whispers and hunger until he could remain a mere scholar no longer.  For the government and their colonel had plans to destroy the Treaty-and reduce the Maroons to despair and dishonor.  The colonel received one bullet in each eye.  The Maroons received the retribution.
