Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Fantastic Stories brings together three of Stevenson's stories. Inspired by a dream, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a cornerstone of Gothic literature. The story, which tells of a man who inhabits two distinct souls—one a doctor, the other a psychopathic killer—discusses the problem of dual personality, a fundamental issue in psychiatry.
The Body Snatcher, which depicts young surgeons whose lust for money and power, under the guise of serving science, is based on a true story. Olalla, on the other hand, delicately interweaves motifs of love, mystery, and exploitation.
Stevenson, who believes that evil and self-destruction are inherent in human nature, shaped his stories as products of an era indifferent to both the happiness and misery of the individual in the oppressive environment of the 19th century. These stories, which reflect the helplessness of the cornered individual in every respect, bring the inner ambiguities of divided selves to an aesthetic plane.
