There is a life after death-on the Riverworld...
Like the other human beings who had been resurrected on the banks of The River-all the people who had ever lived on Earth-Sam Clemens had adjusted to his afterlife very quickly. Food and drink were regularly provided by the mysterious grailstones that lined the waterway; no on needed to worry about money; even wars had lost much of their Earthly fearfulness, since the combatants knew that if mortally wounded, they would be reborn again somewhere else on The River.
If such an existence had no resemblance to Man's various visions of Paradise, Same Clemens didn't are. He at least had friends and hopes to occupy his time.
Joe Miller, in particular, was a friend-an 800-pound, 10-foot titanthrop who was willing to help Clemens in the pursuit of his dreams, no matter what perils that involved.
One of Sam's dreams was to find his wife, Livey...Livey whose face he though he saw everywhere along The River, only to be disappointed time and again. Yet Sam remained undaunted-and his search for his missing spouse did not interfere with his other dream:
To find iron on this iron-poor world and build a Riverboat-a craft more splendid than any that had ever existed. ITe was a dream Sam did not share freely...a dream that was dangerous to follow. And yet follow it he would, perhaps forever...Book two in Farmer's acclaimed Riverworld Series.
